Ohio Nursing and Healthcare Schools
Not unlike the rest of the nation, Ohio is experiencing a shortage of health care providers, more importantly nurses. Without specific steps and measures being taken, the shortage is projected to exacerbate in the coming years. Recent findings show that there is an identifiable imbalance of the supply and demand of the health care providers, hence the State of Ohio is taking serious actions in the fight against this shortage.
The seriousness of the shortage of care providers in Ohio explains why some health care institutions have been forced to reduce the number of inpatients beds, postpone or cancel elective surgeries and have ambulances bypassing the overflowing emergency departments. It is impossible to reduce workforce in a hospital environment during economic downturns, because the number of people in need of health care is not driven by the economy.
The nursing shortage is hugely brought about by aging baby boomer patients but the State is working towards increasing the enrollment numbers in nursing institutions to be able to cater to the vital health care positions that will be left blank. To ensure an adequate health care workforce, hospitals in Ohio are working together with other agencies to help attract students into the nursing field and retaining current nurses within the workforce. Many institutions including individual hospitals have started to employ innovative approaches to recruiting and retaining quality care givers.
The OHA (Ohio Hospital Association) has a strategic FutureThink objective that states hospitals in Ohio attract and retain talented and dedicated care givers. All agencies work towards this common objective by contributing in ways of designing a future of clinical health that incorporates preventive care, technology and an inspired and motivated workforce.
Public and private institutions, together with OHA, are working together to address the workforce shortage in Ohio. They work to develop partnerships with higher education institutions to be able to increase the pipeline for schools that prepare to teach nurses. The State's nursing board is also gearing its efforts towards creating awareness to the community on the benefits of a career in nursing. The public education campaign which offers impressive and attractive Nursing rewards aims also at educating the public that nursing is both a fulfilling and challenging career for both sexes.
In the State of Ohio, the health care providers' fraternity believes in safe staffing, safe patients, hence work towards having a safe staffing.
