Nurse Educator Programs
Despite a severe shortage of nurses, nursing schools are turning away thousands of qualified applicants each year because of an even more severe shortage of qualified nurse educators. According to the National League for Nursing, there are approximately 3500 nursing programs being taught in 2500 schools of nursing with combined enrollments of approximately 300,000 students. "With the projected "shortfall" of nurses to meet the health care needs of our increasingly diverse and aging population, schools may need to increase their enrollments by as much as one-third to "fill the gap," bringing the ideal number of enrolled students close to 400,000."
An estimated 40,000 nurse educators will be needed to handle projected student numbers but we have less than half of that number now and the situation is made worse by the fact that many of the present nursing educators are reaching retirement age and there are such a limited number of graduate programs that offer nurse education specialization. Needless to say the need for nurse educators is acute and those prepared to take this career path are in very high demand!
Nurse educators are prepared at the master's or doctoral level and practice as faculty in colleges, universities, hospital-based schools of nursing or technical schools, or as staff development educators in health care facilities. Nurse educators combine clinical expertise and a passion for teaching into rich and rewarding careers.
