Kansas ranks 13th in the nation among the states lacking primary care services; leaving 15.4% of Kansas citizens with little or no access to primary medical care. Western and south eastern Kansas does not have the medical professionals needed to provide even the basic of care to their residents. These patients must travel and average of three hours just to receive medical care. The population in these areas consists of fewer people than in urban counties. Those with low income and the elderly make up the majority in these remote areas.

Northwest Kansas is involved in a program that helps fund provisions to improve health care systems to their 200 rural hospitals. This program has funds averaging $170,000 thousand dollars a year.
