Human Services Degree - Learning to Serve Online

The human service industry

Human services – these two words speak for themselves – is a field of specialization dealing with services to humanity. The human services industry represents a wide range of careers from social work and counseling, to administrative and management positions. Human services professionals play important roles in our communities. They help the sick, the homeless, and the elderly; they provide counseling services to those who need them. They also organize social programs, such as food banks, shelters for the homeless and the abused, childcare facilities, and special programs for the youth and the disabled. Jobs in this industry are varied, which could be as a public administrator, a counselor, a social worker, a healthcare professional, or psychologist. The job outlook is good and employers could be government agencies, non-profit organizations, and even hospitals.

The training

To work in the human services industry, one should have a strong desire to help people. However, proper educational training is necessary in order the human services worker can perform his/her duties. It starts with a four-year degree leading to a Bachelor of Science degree but Masters and Doctorate degrees are also available. A Bachelors degree is usually enough for entry level jobs, but an advanced degree is desirable for supervisory or administrative positions. For many human service professionals who want to advance in their career, obtaining a higher degree is a huge challenge. Demanding jobs, family responsibilities, and money matters may preclude their going back to the university and sitting in the classroom for a couple of years. These restrictions in time, location, and finances need to be overcome before the goal of an advanced degree can be reached, and online degree programs are the answer. The idea of online education is sometimes viewed with scepticism, thanks to email scams and spams selling instant online certificates. But there are bonafide educational institutions out there which have proven track records in the field of distance educations.

Online degree programs

The University of Phoenix online is one of the largest and most respected accredited private universities in North America. It offers a BS in Human Services/Management program on-campus as well as off-campus. The program teaches students the basic knowledge and skills they would need to join the human service industry. It integrates theoretical and practical training in human services (e.g. counseling, social work, psychology, communications) and good management practices (e.g. planning, leadership, and organizing). The off-campus online computer-based degree program extends beyond the boundaries of the classroom to include busy working professionals without losing the interactive nature of course that is necessary in human services training. Unlike other online programs, communication is many-to-many rather than one-to-one. Each class has a group mailbox and forum where students can put their work for classmates to view and comment. This "electronic classroom" encourages exchange and flow of ideas as well as cooperation and teamwork among students.

Capella University offers Masters and PhD programs in Human Services online. The coursework focuses on different human services sectors such as non-profit, academic, health care, social services, and government settings. To accommodate working professionals, all these online programs are designed to over come restrictions in space and time in a number of ways. Classes are offered one at a time, in sequence. A student can concentrate on one subject at a time, and upon completion, moves on to the next class. The coursework is available 24/7 so that a student can sign on at anytime, depending on his or her schedule. The course does not follow the regular academic calendar of semesters and breaks, so students can start with the course any month of the year. More important, online programs are generally much cheaper than their on-campus counterparts. So no more excuses.
