General Continuing Education Credits for EMS and Fire Services
Crisis Intervention Theory, Practice, and Technique, Updated 2006
Successful completion of this course will teach students the characteristics of crisis and the principles that are behind crisis intervention workers. Students will be taught about the various critical incident stress situations and the approaches used when encountering them. Students will be instructed in the risk factors for suicide and how to manage a patient during a critic stress incident such as loss or trauma.
After completing this course, students will be required to pass an exam with a 70% or higher score. They will then receive a certificate of completion and 2 hours of continuing education credits.
HIPAA: Past, Present, and Future
The student who successfully completes this advanced level course will be able to identify what HIPAA defines as a covered entity and discuss issues related to current HIPAA compliance as well as future initiatives that have HIPAA implications.
After completing this course, a passing grade of 70% or higher will be required. Students will then receive a certificate of completion and 1 hour of continuing education credit.
Managing Time Effectively
After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to define time management; identify why effective time management is important; list the principles of time management; identify major time wasters; discuss strategies to overcome time wasters; and identify ways to include time management in daily care.
A passing grade of 70% is required upon completion of this course. After successful completion, the student will receive a certificate of completion and 2 hours of continuing education credits.
Mental Illnesses
With completion of this course the student will possess the ability to recognize variations and differences between numerous mental illnesses. They should also be able to effectively define numerous disorders including schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. This course will prepare the student to correctly and effectively handle emergency situations that involve patients with mental illness.
A passing grade of 70% is required for course credit. Successful completion will result in the student obtaining a certificate of completion as well as 1 hour of continuing education credits.
Now Hear This – How to Handle the Hard of Hearing
This course will teach the student how to define hearing impairment within the elderly patient. The student will be able to identify three difficult listening situations within a home environment as well as how to choose a listening devise that will assist the patient with hearing more effectively. Most importantly, the student will learn techniques that will assist them to communicate more effectively with persons who are hard of hearing.
This advanced course requires a passing grade of 70% upon completion. The successful student will receive a certificate of completion as well as 2.4 hours of continuing education credits.
Stress…At Work
After the successful completion of this course the student will be able to define work-related stress and describe how it will directly affect health. The student will also be able to identify stressors that are common in the workplace, factors that determine how you will respond to stress, finding coping strategies, and ways to manage stress in the workplace.
This course requires a score of 70% to obtain credits. Upon the successful completion of this course the student will receive a certificate of completion as well as 1 hour of continuing education credit.
Understanding Abuse
This course will provide the student with ways to identify, prevent and stop abuse. The student will learn to identify different forms of abuse that can occur within a life span. They will also learn the definitions of various types of abuse, including; neglect, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and financial abuse. The discussion will include the duties of healthcare workers in relation to abuse as well as the characteristics of abusers.
A passing grade of 70% is required for this class. With the successful completion of this course the student will receive 2 continuing education credits as well as a certificate of completion.
What the EMS Provider Should Do To Prepare For a Deposition
The goal of this course is to provide the EMS provider with knowledge of the deposition process. After completion of this course the student should be able to successfully describe how to prepare for a deposition, with an understanding of the legal implications and process of the procedure. The student will also be able to prepare and plan a strategy on how to successfully conduct themselves during a sworn deposition.
Upon successful completion of this course, with a passing score of 70%, the student will receive a certificate of completion and 1 hour of continuing education credit.
