Connecticut Nursing and Healthcare Schools
Health care shortages are not new to state of Connecticut. There has always been a high demand for health care professionals in this state, however, now the demand is greater than ever before and is steadily increasing. Due to the tremendous advances in technology and medical training as well as a rapidly aging population, Connecticut is finding itself with an escalating
amount of shortages in all positions of health care related workers.
According to the HRSA Health Resource Service Administration Connecticut is projected to reach 55% over the next 10 years associated with supply and demand; simply stated there are just not enough health care workers to meet the needs of the people in these communities and that demand is not expected to deplete. Health departments in Connecticut are having to meet these responsibilities by hiring Traveling Nurses to fill these vacant positions.
Current graduation rates in Connecticut will be unable to produce enough qualified LPNs and Registered Nurses to accommodate for the states population of needed health care services. Although this impacts the delivery of health care to Connecticut's residents, it also opens many career opportunities for those pursing an education or advancement training in the many health care related fields, especially nursing. The Nursing shortage alone is expected to increase from 12% now to 54.9% in the next 10 years. This proves that job security is a great benefit to anyone joining the health care field.
Initiatives are being taken to help recruit Qualified Nurses and other Professional Health Care Workers in this state, by implementing programs to assist with adequate funding for scholarships, grants and other financial assistance: Benefits such as Loan Forgiveness or Repayment programs in exchange for working as nurses in our communities. Provisions are being made for Child Care, Health Insurance, Transportation Assistance, Certification fees and Offsetting costs for professional development.
The Connecticut Department of Labor shows the number of some positions available at this time to be filled are as followed and these numbers are expected to increase by 20% in just 5 years!
- Registered Nurses - 36,740
- LPNs - 7,900
- Home Health Aids - 10,760
- Medical Assistants - 5,640
- Certified Nurses - 27,890
Although nursing shortages receive the most attention, there is also a high demand for these positions with salaries averaging as shown.
- EMT $36,671 - $47,621
- Pharmacists $108,194 - $119,915
