Simple Things Can Help Boost Your Immunity

We’ve all been in offices, elevators and public spaces where those around us were coughing or sneezing up a storm. These kinds of situations can leave you open to catching those very same viruses and bacteria, even if you’re careful and wash your hands. While there is no way to absolutely prevent getting sick at any time of the year, there are some ways that you can help build up your immune system so that illnesses will have a much harder time leaving you feeling achy, sniffly and tired. Better yet, many of the things you can do to give your immune system a lift are simple and easy to do.

Perhaps the easiest and most important thing you can do to help your immune system stay in top-top shape is to get enough sleep. Without it, your body will be run down and may not be able to stave off the germs that come its way. While every person is different, most people need between six to ten hours a night to feel completely rested and getting less can stress you out and put a serious damper on your immunity powers.

The second most important thing you can do for your immune system health is something you should be doing anyway: eating right. When your body gets things like antioxidants, protein, vitamins, minerals fiber and enzymes, it feels good and can function like it was intended. Without these sources of fuel, your body just won’t have the strength and stamina, and you’ll likely be able to feel it in your energy levels before you ever get a cold. Some say cutting out unhealthy foods like sugar and caffeine can also cause a marked upshoot in the effectiveness of your immune system and your overall sense of well-being.

Aside from food, water is also essential to keeping your body balanced and your immune system afloat. Since your body is largely comprised of water, getting enough of it from what you eat and drink is essential. A dehydrated body isn’t going to be able to do much other than beg you for water through thirst and headaches. While every person is different, six to eight glasses a day suffices for most people.

Finally, you may want to consider some age old foods that are said to boost immunity like green tea, lemon, yogurt, turmeric, garlic and pumpkin. Old wives’ tales aside, these foods are packed with nutrients and anti-oxidants that can give your body a lift when it needs it most and could make the difference between spending a week in bed with a cold and avoiding one altogether.

While there is no way to completely prevent yourself from getting sick, you can greatly increase your chances of avoiding a cold by giving your immune system a boost. Even if you do get sick, you’ll have your immune system on your side and the duration of your illness will likely be greatly reduced.
